劉吶鷗出生於日治時期，為當時台南柳營望族出身，曾遠赴日本東京留學，1926年畢業後前往上海震旦大學就讀，企圖闖出一片新天地。他在上海辦雜誌、寫小說、拍電影，追逐未竟的法國夢。於是租界成就了劉吶鷗，在這個中國政府的「法外之地」，他得以追求如魚得水的都會生活。直到1940年9月3日，他無預警地遭到暗殺身亡，三十五歲的生命瞬間嘎然而止…。
