十九世紀中葉，中國沿海開放五口通商，吸引了華南沿海地區貧苦華工前仆後繼地從原鄉到南洋，啟動了一波波金門人「落番」的移民風潮。金門「番客」隨著時代潮流踏上不歸路，不僅改變了個人命運，也啟動了僑鄉金門的變遷。全片以編年史的敘事為軸線，穿插小人物在當時時空下的見證，交織成為一部深刻感人的金門史詩紀錄片。
